Can Mattresses be Recycled?

If a mattress is unfit to donate or sell, then it should be recycled. The metal wire and springs become scrap metal that can be melted down and repurposed. The polyurethane or latex foam in most mattresses is vegetable based and can be burned in biomass furnaces. Foams can also be repurposed into other products like carpet under-padding or even pet beds.

Recycling wood frames can help reduce deforestation. It can be turned into mulch, other furniture, biomass fuel, or other things. The padding made of natural fibers like cotton, wool, rayon, or other plants can be cleaned and dyed for use elsewhere.
