Carpets are manufactured from synthetic and natural fibers, and under padding can be separate or attached. Disposal can be difficult depending on the type of carpet, and its size. Carpets that have tacking strips often have been stretched, and their edges are damaged. Carpets that have been glued down usually need to be cut to remove.

If you have carpet that is ready for disposal, we’ll haul away any carpet that is no longer attached. If you need us to rip it out, set that up when scheduling the appointment.

What to Do With Old Carpet

Unwanted carpets can be bulky items and don’t fit into bins or pails for curbside pickup. If it’s an area carpet that is in good condition, it could be sold or given away. Some charities may accept them for donation too.

Carpets that have been stretched may need to be cut and bound due to edge damage, but if it is large and in good condition, some buyers may be interested. Carpets that are damaged or get damaged during removal may be recyclable or, unfortunately, end up in a landfill. Rugs that have been flooded or torn during removal may be junk.

Getting rid of carpets that are junk may be difficult. Curbside and dumpster may not accept them, so you have to take them for disposal. If that doesn’t fit your plan, call on us to clean out that carpet.

Where Can I Take An Old Carpet to Dump?

Some landfill sites will accept carpet disposal; others won’t. It’s always good to call before you cart it out there. Natural fiber carpets will breakdown over time. Carpets made of synthetic fibers, or that have foam backing made of urethane or polyester won’t break down. Unfortunately, they’ll leach toxins into the ground over time.

Our team will take handle your carpet removal and take it for carpet disposal. If it can go to be recycled, we’ll get it there. If it that’s not an option, we’ll do our best to dispose of it in an eco-friendly way.

Can Old Carpet Be Recycled?

Old synthetic carpets can be recycled and turned into new parts. The fibers can be melted down and spun or molded into new rugs, plastic parts for planes, trains, or Barbie dolls. Natural fiber carpets are made of wool, cotton, bamboo or other plant fibers and can be shredded and used for fertilizers, or even bio-fuel.
