Hot tubs are big and bulky, and even heavy when empty. Before you can begin to move it, you need to drain it. Once it’s drained, the power has to be disconnected. That may just be a cord to unplug, but it may be a bit more complicated. Some hot tubs are hard-wired into the building’s electrical system and could require an electrician.

The final stage before moving your hot tub is the heating system. It may have been disconnected with the electrical connection. However, it could be natural gas or propane, or even connected to the building’s hot water system. Those connections need to be ended too.

What to Do With Old Hot Tub

Hot tubs are too big to dispose of as trash. They won’t decompose in a landfill, so most won’t take them. If it still works, you could post it online or on a community board and sell it. You could offer it for free to friends or family. You might even be able to donate it.

If it doesn’t work and it’s time to junk it, you can see if there’s hot tub recycling in your area or if your local landfill will take it. You could turn it into a garden box or goldfish pond. Alternatively, you could take it apart and dispose of it, or let us know you have a bulky item pickup, and we’ll take care of it.

Before you or anyone else can move a hot tub, it needs to be emptied and disconnected. A clear path also needs to be available, so that it can be carried to a truck or trailer for removal.

A hot tub pick up is not light work. It requires a group of people working together to lift and carry a bulky item, and maneuver a path to a vehicle. Where Can I Take An Old Hot Tub to Dump?

The final resting place of your hot tub depends on the services available in your community. Components of a hot tub can be recycled and reused, or they may have to go to a waste transfer station to await shipping to a recycling center. They are made of molded fiberglass, plastic, metal, and wood, have copper wiring for sensors and electronic controls, plus a circulation pump and heater; all can be recycled, even the cover.
